We develop solutions for the logistics of tomorrow

The ports in Umeå and Vaasa are important logistics hubs for Northern Scandinavia as they are strategically located at the intersection of two international E-roads and connect Sweden and Finland (the journey by ship across Kvarken takes only 3,5 h) with Norway in the west and Eastern Europe and Russia and Asia in the east.

Several exciting development projects are currently underway in Umeå and Vaasa with the aim to develop the ports and make them future-proof. This is particularly important as goods volumes are steadily increasing in both ports, both incoming and outgoing goods.

Construction projects in the ports

In Umeå, 1.4 billion SEK will be invested in various construction projects that are expected to be completed 2027 and in Vaasa, investments are planned for SEK 330 million between 2021 - 2030.

Masterplan for the Port of Umeå

For the Umeå port, a Masterplan is being developed – an overall vision for the Port of Umeå until 2050. A first version is already available, and it shows the development plan for the port. At the same time, work on parts dealing with energy issues, digitalisation, and horizontal criteria such as sustainability, gender equality and equal opportunities is ongoing with the aim of presenting a complete Masterplan at the beginning of 2022.

The world’s most environmentally friendly passenger ferry operates between Umeå and Vaasa

Wasalines new RO-PAX ferry Aurora Botnia operates on the Umeå-Vaasa route. She is the world’s most modern and environmentally friendly passenger ferry combining shore-side electricity, battery power, LNG, and biogas. She has 60 % more capacity on the cargo deck and makes four tours per day instead of two which means a large increase in capacity for freight transport between Umeå and Vaasa. The ferry has been running since August 2021.
